Log inJacaranda (J. mimosifolia) The Jacaranda mimosifolia is a subtropical tree native to South America that is very popular as an ornamental tree due to its beautiful and durable blue flowers. It has quite composite leaves. The Jacaranda is a semi-green tree of South America and can be about 50' (15m) tall and 40' (12m) wide. It also grows in the southern states of the United States, in the Mediterranean countries, South Africa and Australia. The Jacaranda has composed leaves, similar to ferns and beautiful blue or purple flowers of up to 2" (5cm) long and grouped in great panics. They appear in spring and early summer, and last for up to two months. The large capsules of woody seeds contain numerous winged seeds. Jacaranda's bark is thin, gray and becomes scaly when the tree matures. The bouquets are slender and slightly zigzag. Depending on temperatures and the amount of light, the tree can keep its leaves during the winter or drop them. In most cases the leaves fall before the flowers open. The Jacaranda is sometimes also known as the Brazilian rose, or blue jacaranda. If you need help identifying your tree, try our guide. Specific Bonsai care guides for the Jacaranda mimosifoliaPlacement: Jacaranda needs a lot of light and temperatures should not fall under 15° C / 59° F. Especially when planted in a bonsai pot, Jacaranda trees should be protected from lower temperatures. If the Jacaranda stays inside the house all year will be difficult to reduce the size of the leaf. Don't put it above a heating device. In winter, when there is not enough light, the tree can drop all the leaves, but the new ones will grow in spring. At the end of May the blue Jacaranda can be placed outside in a sunny place or semi-shade. Water: Keep the Jacaranda rootball slightly wet. If it dries the leaves it shrinks, it browns and falls. If overloaded, the leaves become yellow and fall. Fertilization: Use liquid fertilizer during the growth period every week, in winter once every two weeks. Pruning and wiring: Jacarandas grow strongly. Shorten the new shoots to one or two pairs of leaves when four or five have grown. The strong pod becomes better in spring. The larger leaves can be cut at any time during the growing season. The wiring is possible but the cables must be removed after three months at the latest. Young shoots when they start to light. Repotting: Replace the Jacaranda every second year in spring and use a well draining soil mixture. Propagation: The Jacaranda tree can spread from soft wood seeds and cuts. Weights and diseases: The scale sometimes strikes the Jacaranda. Use a specific insecticide containing oil in that case. For more detailed information on these techniques, try our section. SearchNew to bonsai - Unplanted and keysless Welcome to Loco! The pictures of the seed could be identified. Sometimes they are not the seed announced. Did you get some of each? I'd plant half now. Sorce Welcome aboard! Starting from the seed is definitely a great way to grow a tree, as you have total control over it, but one thing to take into account is that it is definitely not a fast process. There is no such thing as a bonsai seed, as the bonsai are real trees, managed in a way to minimize them. You should definitely cultivate the seeds, as it will be a really cool way to develop trees, but you may also want to do some research/look at the development of bonsai from day care reserves and stuff along those lines as well. You can never have too many trees. Bonsai Mirai has very good information about the selection of a tree and the following steps you can follow for the slow development process of them in eventual bonsai. . I think I can do it too. I can buy a tree and have some experience when my trees are grown. And yes, I am aware and trying to prepare for this investment... Thanks for the information, if you stay around the thread I'd love to hear more information you have. Hello, everyone. I am new in bonsai and even newer in this community. I have been looking through these threads and you seem to be very informative and helpful, but I see very few entries regarding starting bonsai seed. I'm really excited to start this trip, but I have no idea what I'm doing. Can you give me some advice and maybe some resources to help me on the way? I bought a bonsai planting kit outside of Amazon from a seller called a garden republic, initially worried about quality but my relief seems to be appropriate. (I can fill in with photos later if I would help) Anyway. This kit came with seeds of four different breeds of baby trees, as follows Black Abeto - picea Mariana Brazilian pink wood - jacaranda mimosifolia Flame tree - delonix regia pino Bristlecone - pinus aristata I live in NE Florida, it's very hot and wet. Can you give me information about these plants, the germination process, the interior / exterior, how long to give sun, the irrigation frequency. I'm not sure if I'm gonna plant the four at the same time either. Probably not. Any advice to start would be useful. I'm gonna plant bonsai and I don't know how. Welcome, I've got the same kit about 9 months ago, I've got 3 reeds, 4 chips and a pin left. The kit is a good introduction, gives false hope, however, it is fun to grow from the sowing of your only an intensive work process. I started to acquire dozens of nurseries since then, junipers, pines, I have over 100 plants and about 40 trees in 6 months... people talk of madness here. I didn't know what a yew was six months ago, I have four now. I went to Lowes the other day, I couldn't go out without a Chinese wisteria that was too overgrown, a big $9 wood and a $25 Japanese yoke I still have to work on. I like to work on the trees, their very therapeutic. My advice, buy more trees and experience everything in different stages. Welcome to the site! If you want to see madness... there's an entire FORUM for people who participate in a year of 6 years. .. We're about 18 months away at this point. Fun to see what people have been doing, the various methods and the results. Generally sow seed in a communal pot (all together in a larger pot) then transplant seed seed when they are a few weeks old but many rookies care about the transplant so so so sow each seed in an individual pot. It's up to you, both modes work well.
