How to Bonsai an Oak Sapling | Bonsai Tree GardenerLog inOak (Quercus)Oaks are strong trees, most are deciduos but some are alwaysver, produce very characteristic fruits (acorns). There are several hundred species of oak growing in Europe, North Africa, Southwest Asia, Central and North America. The European oak (quercus robur) and the American white oak (Quercus alba) are quite similar in appearance and characteristics. Both are deciduos and resistant to cold. The mature trees can be up to 40 meters (130 feet) tall and 800 years old. The powerful trunks can reach a diameter of 4' (120cm). Oak wood is used for building, ships, tools and furniture since ancient times. Many wild animals eat the acorns. The heavy branches of the trees bend out and develop a characteristic zigzagging line. The crown widens in old age. The wolf leaves are about 6" (15cm) long, dark green and spin yellow and brown in autumn. Many southern and Mediterranean oaks are always green and not steep, some are smaller trees or even shrubs. Oaks are very suitable for bonsai and easy to care for, but even frost tolerant species need winter protection when planted in containers. If you need help identifying your tree, try our guide. Bonsai specific care guides for the Bonsai oak treePlacement: Oak trees prefer an airy place in full sun during the growing season. The European oak, white oak and other northern oak species are resistant to cold when they grow on the ground, but need winter protection when planted in containers. A cold but no ice, garage or shed is a good winter place for an oak bonsai tree. Water: Regar the oak thoroughly when the soil drys, but avoid the constant humidity of the soil. Water less in winter but never let rootball dry completely. Fertilization: Apply solid organic fertilizer once a month or use a liquid fertilizer every week during the crop season. It does not feed with very high nitrogen that would cause large leaves, long nudes and greater susceptibility to insects and mild. Pruning and wiring: The hard pruning is done early in spring before the shoots are opened. Strong terminal shoots can also be eliminated. New shots are cut leaving two leaves. Do not defoliate oaks completely because it would weaken them too, but you can remove the larger leaves from time to time. Trim the upper parts of the crown attentively because they grow stronger than the lower branches. When oaks are connected, be careful to remove the wire before it bites in the bark. Wire marks will be visible for a long time. Uncle wires can be a good choice. Repotting: Young oaks must be repotted every two years, older every three to five years in spring before the shoots open. Don't cut more than a third of the roots. Propagation: Oaks spread easily from the seed. Air cuts and transmissions do not root in most cases. Weights and diseases: Oaks often suffer from dusty mold. A mixture of 10 g of soda bicarbonate, 10 ml of oil violated, a drop of detergent dishes washing and 1 l of water can help when sprayed repeatedly at intervals of several days. Less often the blister oak leaf, the scorch bacterial leaf and the oxide of pine-oak. In severe cases, ask a professional gardener to help you and use a specific pesticide. Some insects and mites cause galls that do not damage the tree in most cases. Flemches, scale, miners and oakworms (caterpillars of various moths) can also bother oaks. You can try to tighten, scratch or collect these or fly them with a water jet instead of or before using chemical pesticides. Care for the caterpillars of the oak-processional moth whose toxic hairs are dangerous for humans. For more detailed information on these techniques, try our section.
